Antiqued Dresser

One huge benefit of having a husband who buys foreclosed homes is all the goods people leave behind. This was an old Dresser My husband picked up for me that was no longer wanted. It looked good as it was, but I wanted to add a little color to it, or a lot of color, I should say.

Here's what I Did:

First I took all The Drawers out and removed the cupboard fronts.

Wiped down with a damp cloth (it wasn't dirty enough to require soap and water)

I removed all the hardware and painted all the pieces with a Satin Finish Paint (2 coats).

I started with a sample size paint just to be sure I liked the color, but it painted all my drawers easily.

I mixed 3 parts Floetrol with 1 part Dark Brown Paint (sample size again) to create a glaze.

This is about half as expensive as buying an actual glaze and works just as well.

I painted some of the glaze onto a small section of the dresser and then wiped with a rag (you need a lot of rags for a big project like this). I wouldn't recommend doing large areas because the glaze dries too fast and it will look really streaky. If you do get too much on there you can always use a wet rag to wipe it off and start over.

Your glaze will dry darker than it seems when you put it on, but don't be too particular about how it looks, the less uniform the better.

When I was done with the glazing

I used the excess to run my brush at a 45 degree angle along the edge to create a worn look.

I added some new hardware

Voila!

P.S. You can also add a coat of polyurethane to the very top , which really helps to protect the paint, but I was just too anxious to get it in my house.
